The Inch Dumbell

Just a bit of interesting weightlifting stuff.

The Inch Dumbbell has a rich, interesting history that goes back as far as weights themselves. Thomas Inch (1881-1963) of Great Britain, requested three dumbbells to be made by Appleby and Brogdens Iron Works for his traveling circus show. Mr. Inch himself was no slouch in the strength game. Once Britain’s Strongest Man, he had a personal best overhead press of 356 lbs, could deadlift 560 lbs with one hand at the age of 69(!) and could easily lift the original Dumbbell at a bodyweight of only 168 lbs at the time. (Yup, he weighed less than the Dumbbell itself!)

So when Appleby and Brogdens Iron Works made his Dumbbells, because of the tremendous weight Inch wanted them to weigh, they figured the only way to keep them from bending was to make them with an extra thick handle. This is what would end up making them so popular and so difficult to lift. The three Dumbbells weighed 130, 153, and 172 pounds. The lighter two had 2″ diameter handles while the heaviest (now replicated) had a handle “as thick as an old glass milk bottle”. It’s actual measurements were: 20″ overall length, 8.5″ diameter of the spheres at each end, and the handle was 7.75″ in circumference, 2.47″ in diameter and 4″ long. (Distance between each sphere.)

Thomas once wrote an article entitled “Secret of the Unliftable Challenge Dumbbell”. He discussed that over 20,000 strongmen, gymnasts, boxers, wrestlers, bodybuilders, and powerlifters had tried it for over 40 years, all without budging it off the Earth.

Its a Internet fad right now where you send someone a link or get them to click on a link that they think will lead them to one place but it actually leads them to a video of Rick Astley (most of the time singing Never Gonna Give you Up).

Recap of the end of last week

Here is a brief recap of the end of last week:

Wed Night
- At about 7ish went over to Ashley's for dinner
- Around 2am woke up feeling a little sick to my stomach. Went to the bathroom and that's when the hell began. I will spare you what the next roughly 18 hours were filled with and instead show you this picture of a popular Simpsons character:

- I slept for about 40 of the next 48 hours only eating a piece of plain bread and some Gatorade until Friday night when I was able to eat some Matzo Ball soup from Fromin's. Here is a picture of a matzo ball beach ball:

Felt much better on Saturday and am now happy to report that I am back to my old self again! Thanks for your concern.

Human Giant - Season 2

This is a show that I discovered last year after visiting the site Aziz Is Bored. Its a sketch comedy show and it is hilarious! If you were a fan of The State then you will like this show too. If you watch Best Week Ever you will recognize two of the leads and they have a lot of the other BWE guys on the show a lot. Here is a promo for the second season of Human Giant.

Not a lot of time today so I will just give you this video from a hip-hop group in LA that I discovered a little while back, Brother Reade. I have not had a chance to see them live yet but I really like their style.

The Flossy Flossy...

Ok... as you can see I have not posted on this blog since Paris went to jail in May of 2007. How can I expect this blog to catch like wildfire and become the most popular site on the Internet if i do not post to it?

That's right, I can't.

So I really am going to make a concerted effort to post at least SOMETHING each day. And hopefully you all will find that SOMETHING interesting, amusing or helpful in some way.

So to start it all up again I give you this video:

I have now played 3 games of Scrabulous. Its pretty fun. I have a record of 2-1.

The interesting thing is that my one loss came at the hands of karma. I was playing Neimon and decided that I would cheat for the whole game. I found this website, and went to work on kicking his ass. Only problem was that it was a lot harder to cheat than to just play the game legit. I didn't want it to seem like I was cheating so I was trying to find words that were not too outrageous and just going back and forth between the two websites was a pain in the ass.

As they say, "karma's a bitch." I lost the game by a lot. My two wins came legitimately so I guess its true that karma is indeed a bitch.

I know we have all seen it before and so have I but May 15th is another of those "Don't buy gas to protest high gas prices" days.

I will be the first to say that I don't think this works. But with more and more reports saying that we will be over the $4 mark by this summer I am willing to try anything.

What do you have to lose? Just fill up on the 14th or if you can wait then wait until the 16th. Who knows? If we all give it a try MAYBE, just MAYBE it will make a small difference.

What's that you say? You want to take it one step further?

How about don't drive at all on May 15th? This blog at LAist.com suggests taking public transportation, biking or walking.
